About the kHaus

Principles

The kHaus promotes exchange, synergies, interactions, and encounters - within the house with our users, organizers, and visitors, on the premises, in the lively neighborhood, with neighbors, and interested parties in the city and beyond.

We are committed to a space with a variety of uses, where we can try things out and experiment, where we can deal constructively with political and socially relevant issues, and which, through access that is as low-threshold as possible, welcomes newcomers to actively help shape and experience this same space and its structures.

We invite you to linger here beyond the constraints of consumerism. Lack of money is not an insurmountable obstacle to be allowed to use our premises.

Discrimination, especially in the form of sexism, racism, homophobia, or nationalism, has no place here.

We strive for diversity in our operations, structures, and the program that emerges from them. We critically reflect on our structures and are open to adjusting our actions accordingly.

Context

Since 1966, when the military moved out, there have been debates and arguments about what to do with the main building of the Kaserne, an architectural landmark in the heart of Basel.

Since 1980, the area has been used by various actors from culture, sports, gastronomy, religion, etc. The area has become a well-known cultural and important living center in Basel. The main building did not play a significant role and was mainly used by schools.

With the conversion of the main building, kHaus, the Rhine promenade was connected to the barracks area via three breakthroughs.

A contemporary, open and lively cultural and creative center is to be created using a new use. It will have a long-term positive impact on the barracks area, the surrounding neighborhoods, and the city through its projects.

Fluxdock AG developed a concept co-creatively with 21 organizations and was awarded the contract by the technical and steering commission in spring 2021. The co-creative process ensured that the concept represented what could realistically be implemented and desired, and needed by the organizations. It was not only an integral part of the project in its conception but also remained a central tenet in its implementation and realization.

Thus, fundamental aspects of the organization and living together in the newly renovated main building are discussed, negotiated, developed, discarded, and improved in a co-creative way.
